Abstract

Abstract A new and detailed model for the calculation of γ-ray spectra, multiplicities and multiplicity distributions of γ-rays, emitted in (HI, xnγ) reactions, is proposed. The many highly excited states are treated in a statistical way, using a level density formula. The states belonging to a few low-lying collective bands, parallel to the yrast line, are taken into account explicitly. We assume only E1 transitions within the level continuum and from this continuum to the low-lying states. The discrete lines in the γ-spectrum, arising from transitions between the discrete states, are calculated using a master equation technique. Calculated results for the reactions 150 Nd (α, 4 n ) 150 Sm (E α = 45 MeV ), 158 Gd (α, 4 n ) 158 Dy (E α = 40 MeV ) and 160 Gd (α, 4 n ) 160 Dy (E α = 40 and 49 MeV ) are compared to experimental data.
