Abstract
The Maderas Rainforest Conservancy (MRC) was founded in 2008 and manages two forested properties: (i) the La Suerte Biological Field Station, which is located in an Atlantic lowland rain forest in northeastern Costa Rica (4000 mm of annual rainfall) and (ii) the Ometepe Biological Research Station, which is part of a tropical dry forest found on the southeastern coast of Ometepe Island in Nicaragua (1400 mm of annual rainfall). Ometepe Island consists of two forested volcanoes, Volcan Concepcion and Volcan Maderas, from which MRC gets its name. Ometepe Island itself is very important ecologically, and on June 5, 2010, it was declared a biosphere status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
