Many reef areas are stillpoorly known, but the Abrolhos area (approximatelybetween latitudes 17°20'S and 18°IO'S), located on anexpansion of the continental shelf, is considered tohave the largest and richest reefs in the AtlanticOcean south of the Amazon River (Laborel, 1970).AlI 15 species of stony reef coraIs recorded for Braziloccur in these reefs and five are endemic to Brazil.In 1992, a coral-cover monitoring programwas initiated at the Vicosa Reef
