Abstract
International standards for carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in domestic premises dictate the permissible alarm-triggering times for different CO concentration levels. Simple, but reliable, integration algorithms should be included in low-cost smart alarms based on microcontrollers. Here, we present a bio-inspired digital integrator and its performance is tested against American and European standards. The difficulties to fulfil the later are discussed, and some modifications of the algorithm are introduced. Finally, the admissible concentration errors are calculated.
