Abstract

A novel colorimetric probe CTQ for consecutive detection of Cu2+ and H2S was synthesized, based on benzothiadiazole moiety. CTQ displayed colorimetric change from orange to violet with Cu2+ and the resulting CTQ-Cu2+ complex could detect H2S through the cation displacement process. The stoichiometries of CTQ to Cu2+ and CTQ-Cu2+ to H2S were found to be 1:1, and their detection limits were valued at 0.55 and 0.45 μM. The practical applications of CTQ to Cu2+ and H2S in real water samples and test strips were successfully achieved. The successive detection of Cu2+ and H2S by CTQ could be repeated several times. Job plot, ESI-MS, FT-IR experiments and DFT calculations were performed to investigate the sensing mechanisms of CTQ to Cu2+ and H2S.
