Abstract

The design of a 1–8 Gb/s optical wireless communication (OWC) dual-mode receiver is presented in this paper. The transimpedance amplifier (TIA) based reconfigurable receiver implements a high-sensitivity (HSS) mode to enable 1Gb/s OWC link over long distance, while a high speed (HSD) mode to enable up to 8Gb/s OWC link over short distance. In the HSS mode, the receiver is designed for high gain and low noise. In the HSD mode, the receiver is optimized for wide bandwidth. The receiver is designed in TSMC 65 nm CMOS technology. Post layout simulation results show that the receiver achieves maximum bandwidth of 5 GHz with 88 dB transimpedance gain in HSD mode. The receiver also achieves 0.7 GHz bandwidth with 125 dB transimpedance gain in HSS mode. The total input referred current noise is 60 nArms and 1.2 μΑ rms at 1 Gb/s and 8 Gb/s respectively. The overall receiver dissipates 34mW at 1.2 V supply voltage.
