Abstract

Levonorgestrel (LNG) emergency contraception (EC)—commonly known as Plan B®--became available in the United States (US) without a prescription in 2013, but barriers to access remain. One barrier is misinformation about the medication and who can obtain it. To assess the accuracy of information provided by community pharmacies in West Virginia (WV), a state with particularly low LNG EC access and high teen pregnancy rate, we conducted a mystery caller study to ask pharmacies questions about the requirements for purchasing LNG EC and when it should be taken for maximum effectiveness.
