Abstract

Two gasifier models were used to simulate a pilot-scale carbonizer and the simulation results were compared with test data. The MGAS model describes the carbonizer as a plug-flow-reactor. The more detailed MFIX model describes the multiphase hydrodynamics in the carbonizer. The MGAS model predicts carbon conversion and CO{sub 2} mode % in reasonable agreement with data. The MFIX model gives detailed information such as the fluidization regime, flame location, and coal devolatilization location. Areas for model improvement have been identified.
