Abstract
Optic disc pits and optic disc drusen are both congenital abnormalities of the optic nerve head. Optic disc pits are congenital excavations, usually seen in association with other abnormalities of the optic nerve and peripapillary retina, including large optic nerve head size, large inferior colobomas of the optic disc, and retinal colobomas. Optic nerve head drusen are hyaline bodies within the optic disc that can alter the nerve, giving the appearance of congestion. Both congenital abnormalities are associated with retinal pathology, including subretinal hemorrhage, neovascular membranes, and serous retinal detachment.
