Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of the need for uninterrupted power sources and their role in improving power quality and reliability. The basics of power quality, definitions associated with this subject, methods of improving the quality of voltage, and the ways in which uninterrupted power can be made available are also discussed in the chapter. The chapter covers in detail the static UPS systems, and their selection criteria when applied to ADP facilities. The issue of correct grounding practices necessary for various configurations of static UPS systems is explained in detail. Unless correct grounding practices are adopted for UPS fed power distribution equipment appropriate to the configuration of the UPS, noise attenuation cannot be ensured which, might result in malfunctioning of systems fed by them.
