Abstract

In the late 1980s, a number of monitor manufacturers got together and formed a group to standardize the super video graphics array (SVGA) monitors. A super VGA monitor is one that supports the same modes as a VGA, plus other modes. This group is called the video electronics standards association (VESA®). This chapter presents the concept of windows as defined by the VESA BIOS extensions (VBE), the internals of SVGALib, VgelnfoBlock and ModelnfoBlock, and SVGALib functions. The service 0x01 is called Return Mode Information. This function returns a great deal of mode specific information, such as whether the mode is supported, the number of colors supported in the mode, the number of pixels in each dimension, and much more. The VideoModePtr field points to an array listing the supported modes. This array ends with OxFFFF. The WinAAttributes and WinBAttributes are bit masks. The chapter lists the meanings of each field in the mask.
