Abstract

Mitigating risk of a large stock of infrastructure poses several challenges for infrastructure managers not only for the diagnostic and the identification of intervention needs but also for getting affordable engineering solutions (usually under a budget constrained environment), the prioritization of interventions, the efficiency of associated investments, and overcoming implementation issues. This chapter discusses these challenges and options to address them from the experience of the World Bank's Global Program for Safer Schools (GPSS) on supporting governments in developing countries to reduce risk of thousands of vulnerable school buildings. Data from World Bank funded projects in Kyrgyz Republic and Peru was taken to illustrate sections along the chapter. Even though the study case refers to school infrastructure, concepts, principles and approaches apply to other infrastructure sectors.
