Abstract

The utilization of renewable raw material is one of the main pathways for sustainable manufacturing. The growing niche market for sustainable textiles is prompting the reintroduction of natural dyes on a commercial scale. This chapter aims to expand the limited knowledge about natural dyes, its application methods, and recent development to the reader. A brief description about natural dyes is followed by a detailed discussion on the feasibility of industrial level application. The compatibility of natural dyes and emerging technologies such as plasma pretreatment, ultrasound-assisted dyeing, and inclusion of chitosan, is evaluated. There is a clear indication that natural dyes will continue to serve mankind and exhibit their importance to future generation. These dyes are resilient and will play a significant role in making textiles sustainable.
