Abstract

Electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) offer significant advantages over traditional paper laboratory notebooks, but most academic and government research labs today continue to use paper notebooks. ELNs are much more than just a simple alternative to paper lab notebooks. They allow users to capture, manage, share, and trace all kinds of laboratory information that can be accessed from anywhere. ELNs save time, eliminate redundancy, and protect intellectual property. While they are widely used in industry, their implementation in academic labs has been slow. Promoting ELNs in universities and providing training on how to use them could be an interesting new area for subject librarians to get involved in. This chapter introduces readers to this technology and its possible implementation in education and research.
