Abstract

Lube and seal system reliability plays a prominent role in critical rotating equipment reliability. In my experience, approximately 60% of the causes for unexpected machinery train ESDs (Emergency shutdowns) have been traced to lube and seal oil system issues. This chapter will present the issues that I have encountered in over 50years of designing, testing, and working with clients to resolve oil system reliability issues and provide cost-effective solutions. It is important to establish plant oil system specifications based on the latest edition of specification API 614 (American Petroleum Institute—Lubrication, shaft—sealing and oil—control systems and auxiliaries) and in plant Lessons Learned.
