Abstract

The integrity of the collateral ligaments is critical to the stability and function of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Prior trauma, joint stiffness, and iatrogenic injury can compromise the function of the collaterals and be a barrier to achieving proper joint balance during TKA. Management of ligamentous injury requires proper recognition, assessment of the degree of joint instability, and treatment of knee joint instability. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a systematic approach to the evaluation of treatment of ligament injury encountered during total knee arthroplasty.
