Abstract

This chapter discusses the use of complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors for imaging from the space. The imaging techniques and the specific requirements for image sensor application onboard spacecraft are discussed in detail, including time delay integration (TDI), hyperspectral imaging, radiation hardness, and system considerations. Specific examples of CMOS and CCD sensor architectures and applications for Earth observation, star and Sun tracking, solar system exploration, astronomy, and science are presented. The future trends in space imaging and sensor developments are described as well.
