Abstract

This chapter deals with five case studies that show the importance of pinch analysis in a very wide range of situations with practical examples of its implementation, particularly in the tricky areas such as stream data extraction that is difficult to systematize. The case studies described are based on engineering designs performed in industry. The case of the crude preheat train is known to be the first pinch study performed on a major operating plant. It was commissioned in 1969 and used state-of-the-art conventional technology. The third case of the evaporator/dryer plant relates to a survey carried out in a food-processing factory. The fourth case is comprised of an organic chemicals manufacturing site providing an example of the benefits of heat integration between separate processes. The last one, the hospital site, features the application of pinch analysis to a nonprocess plant and illustrates the time-dependent analysis in action.
