Abstract

Abstract : The spectral reflectances of water and carbon dioxide cryodeposits were measured in a vacuum integrating sphere as a function of angle of incidence, substrate material, and cryodeposit thickness. Both black paint and a polished copper surface were used as substrates. Measurements were made for wavelengths between 0.36 and 1.15 microns. Cryodeposit thicknesses ranging from 0 to 2.5 mm were investigated. For large cryodeposit thickness, the reflectance was, in general, increased considerably, especially for a black substrate. For thin cryodeposit thicknesses of less than 10 microns, interference patterns were observed. A computer program was written to calculate the energy reflected from cryodeposits for 6000K blackbody irradiation. The reflectance data obtained in the present experiments may be useful for application to thermal models of planetary surfaces such as those of Mars and Venus. (Author)
