Abstract

Tactical emergency medical support (TEMS) and tactical medicine have spread and evolved enormously during the past 20 years, but the foundations from the battlefield lessons learned are still valid. TEMS teams should be experts in delivering appropriate basic trauma care in a hostile environment and follow the guidelines developed for tactical emergency casualty care. It is also important to understand the wider scope of the TEMS team’s role before, during, and after a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) mission. The rise of post-September 11 terrorism and the multimodal attacks on civilian life seen in Paris, London, Berlin, and other large cities forces TEMS to adapt to changing threats and involvement in ongoing mass casualty situations. Training and organizational planning should consider these kinds of complex scenarios.
