Abstract

Spine surgery has evolved since the 1990s into a multidisciplinary specialty. This chapter presents in depth the most recent evidence-based advances in perioperative anesthetic management for spine surgery. The chapter covers myriad aspects of perioperative anesthetic management ranging from preoperative assessment, to airway management in cervical spine surgeries, intraoperative fluid management, and new techniques for goal-directed fluid therapy. Other important topics such as the anesthetic management for intraoperative neuromonitoring and pain management after spine surgery are also discussed. Postoperative visual loss after spine surgery and other important complications are covered in detail.
