Abstract
This paper describes development of an optical loss type deformation sensor in matrix materials such as aluminum and epoxy by breaking a pre-notched optical fiber embedded in them. The pre-notches were made on an optical fiber with an optical fiber cutter and the fiber was embedded in aluminum or epoxy matrix. The pre-notched optical fiber embedded materials were bent under monitoring of optical transmission. The optical fiber embedded in aluminum by the interphase forming/bonding method does not cause optical interference type transmission loss, which is clealy found in the case of epoxy matrix, and works well as an optical loss type sensor.
