Abstract

Much work has been done to analyze the factors that influence medical students' specialty choice. However, little has been documented regarding the characteristics, motivations, and experiences of students who choose a career in emergency medicine (EM) compared with other specialty fields. Other research has sought to account for recent trends in medical student specialty choice by emphasizing the importance of “lifestyle” factors and classifying certain specialties, including EM, as “controllable lifestyle.” We sought to assess differences in the importance given to various factors influencing specialty choice and compared students choosing EM to those choosing a specialty in one of three subgroups: “controllable lifestyle,” primary care, and surgical specialties.
