Abstract
As Austria again faced early elections in October, new developments in environmental law and policy remained limited. The revision of the Green Electricity Act and the Waste Management Act stands out, the transposition of the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) continued at the state level, and the expansion of the Vienna airport was finally approved after years of back-and-forth negotiations. Glyphosate was almost banned in Austria, and the people’s climate protection petition was opened for signature this year. The new coalition government program remains committed to the Paris Agreement on climate change. With a view to the energy transition, specific expansion targets for renewable energy sources were defined: eleven terrawatt hours for photovoltaics; ten terrawatt hours for wind; five terrawatt hours for water; and one terrawatt hour for biomass.
