Abstract

This chapter presents the application of time-dependent reliability methods to developing maintenance strategy for structures and infrastructure. Firstly, the concept of risk-cost optimization is introduced and, based on which, the risk-cost optimized maintenance strategy is formulated. The algorithm for developing computing program for formulating the risk-cost optimized maintenance strategy is provided and associated failures models for systems and components are presented. With the developed maintenance strategy, technologies used for maintenance are outlined which cover both repairs and strengthening and for both reinforced concrete structures and steel structures. Then the principles of risk management are outlined, including risk identification and mitigation with focus on sensitivity analysis to identify most severe sources of risk. Finally, application examples of the presented methodology to developing maintenance strategy for both above ground and underground infrastructure are provided.
