Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of quality control circles and the impact of its lack in various industries. Contrary to popular opinion, the success of the Japanese has little to do with their being workaholics, as they have been recently described, or with their mysterious oriental culture. In many ways, the disappointing performance of British industry is largely a result of attempts to adopt the American system of scientific management, often referred to as the Taylor System. It is highly probable that only a fraction of the existing circles have been registered, and there are many circles that are not registered yet. There may be at least 10 times as many circles that are now performing quality circle activities but are not yet registered. Before commencing a quality circle program, it is necessary to make extremely careful preparations. The concept itself is so simple that it would be all too easy for a company to be led along a primrose path to the wrong destination.
