Abstract

This chapter we describe the historical perspective of PCS, the technology requirements for PCS, and the role that MMIC technology can play in PCS. Personal communication service (PCS) refers to advanced wireless communication services such as cellular voice, wireless data, and messaging, which are offered separately today. All of these services will be offered on the personal communications network (PCN), which will be an advanced network that retains the best features of the current cellular network. The goal of PCS is to offer communication services anywhere, anytime, and anyplace, even if the person is mobile. That means, for example, that people will have a phone number which will follow them whether at work, at home, on vacation, or even on an airplane. This requires an intelligent wireless network which can locate a person at any given time.
