Abstract

This year for the 21st year in a row U.S. drug industry sales will set a record. Total industry sales of all products will reach $8.4 billion, up 15.4% from 1966. Pretax earnings will touch a record $1.61 billion, up from $1.43 billion in 1966. Sizable gains are likely for 1968, too. C&EN's computer-calculated trend projections show total U.S. drug industry sales of all products next year at close to $9.5 billion, pretax earnings at about $1.8 billion. Thus the U.S. drug industry now is adding about a billion dollars a year to total sales. Helping fuel this surge are booming sales to various government agencies and an increasingly affluent, health-conscious population. Sales of prescription drugs to federal, state, and local governments will total some $350 million this year, up almost 17% from 1966.
