Abstract

The main cause of user interface (UI) bloopers in software is the adverse circumstances that are created by the management. This chapter presents common ways that development organizations hinder the development of usable, useful software. Management misconceptions and mistakes that lead to poor product usability fall into two categories: counterproductive attitudes about usability and counterproductive development processes. Bloopers that are discussed in the beginning are related to the management misconceptions and faulty attitudes. “Treating UI as low priority” is one of the bloopers that is discussed. Its many variations are assuming that usability has low impact on market success, assuming that the UI is only “fonts and colors,” assuming that users can adapt to anything, rationalizing, and assigning the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to junior programmers. A measure to avoid such bloopers is management should make it a high priority to develop products that have high quality user interfaces.
