Abstract

Imaging of live cells is one of the most important parts of biological studies. An ideal imaging tool for cells study is the one that has a high specificity and sensitivity and does not require labelling. This chapter will review the recent efforts in the development of various optical techniques for non-destructive, chemical-specific and label-free live cell imaging. A particular focus will be on the application of vibrational spectroscopic imaging techniques such as Raman and Fourier transform infrared to live cell imaging. Example applications include imaging of lipid distribution, cell death and xenobiotic-in-live-cell studies.
