Abstract
Implantable and long-lasting drug delivery systems provide sustained delivery of drug over a period of weeks to months. These systems can provide many advantages in the delivery of drugs for conditions in which the patient is required to take medications frequently for an indefinite period of time, such as less frequent dosing and improved quality of life. This chapter will cover infectious, inflammatory, endocrine, and neurodegenerative diseases. In the majority of these diseases, frequent dosing is required by the patient, leading to poor adherence by them. Therefore long-acting implants and systems are evaluated as novel methods for drug delivery, which can reduce dosing frequency and improve patient adherence, in turn improving efficacy of treatment.
