Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the global positioning system (GPS), and how it can be leveraged in intelligent vehicle applications. It describes the history of space-based positioning projects that have led to the current GPS, followed by a detailed description of the system as it exists and operates today. A discussion of the science behind the GPS, and the techniques and components required for determining a user's position accurately and cost-effectively are also described. Some applications where GPS is used in the intelligent vehicle and related spaces, and services that can be made possible because of GPS-based positioning capabilities are discussed. NAVSTAR GPS system and GPS system characteristics are described. The chapter also discusses satellite based positioning and positioning techniques—namely, autonomous GPS positioning, differential GPS positioning, inverse differential GPS positioning, server-assisted GPS positioning, enhanced client-assisted GPS positioning, and dead reckoning.
