Abstract Infrared spectroscopy of Nova Herculis 1991 between 8 and 13 microns 80 days after maximum revealed a large featureless infrared excess that was caused by a shell of optically thin silicate dust. The lack of an identifiable continuum underlying the silicate feature suggests that the grain radii were smaller than about 0.8 micron. The absolute visual magnitude at maximum was -9.4, the extinction was 1.7 mag, and the distance was 3.4 kpc. From these we find that the mass of dust was 10 exp -7 solar mass and the bolometric luminosity at maximum was about 20 times the Eddington limit for a 1 solar mass white dwarf.
