Abstract

The authors have been introducing the engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB, 1806-1859) in the JSME as a series of the study of history of engineering in the Victorian age. There can be no doubt that he made a significant contribution to the world and established himself as a leader in his chosen field. In this report, his engineering spirit that designed and conducted his great work, for example, railways, ships, tunnels, cuts and station, has been discussed through practical illustration. Presumably, his father and correctly his practical training breed his engineering spirit, and its core is creative imagination based on mathematical skill, love and passion, patience, challenge and dreaming.
