Abstract
Magnetic bearing can support the rotor without physical contact. Hybrid (HB) type magnetic bearing is recognized as an efficient one. However, the permanent magnet (PM) should be installed between the two radial magnetic bearings. This construction requires thick magnetic circuit between them which causes heavy structure. A new IPM type HB magnetic bearing has been proposed which has compact magnetic circuit, small construction and low cost. However, they could not control axial direction. In this paper, a new type of axial magnetic bearing is proposed and designed.
