Abstract

This chapter will summarize some of the recent international literature on treatment for Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Although IGD is a “condition for further study” in the DSM-5, treatment services for gaming and Internet-related problems are increasingly prevalent worldwide and particularly so in East Asia. At this stage, the evidence base is tentative, but appears to favor cognitive-behavioral approaches. This chapter begins by summarizing the current state-of-the-art, and then, explains some of the limitations in design and reporting quality of IGD treatment studies with reference to the CONSORT guidelines. This chapter then provides an overview of the basic cognitive-behavioral treatment approach to IGD. The practical challenges faced by clinicians working with clients with IGD are summarized. Guidelines for psychoeducation and strategies to increase treatment engagement and rapport are outlined. The conceptual underpinning of some therapeutic techniques is explained, with practical examples of techniques such as activity scheduling and behavioral experiments.
