Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the current state of the art of structured and semi-structured interviews for use with children and adolescents. It provides an understanding of the issues in diagnostic interviewing methods by discussing their commonalities as well as differences, such as developmental issues, distinctions between structured and semi-structured, computerization, handling of multiple informants, and the utility and context of psychometrics. Structured and semi-structured diagnostic interviews appropriate for use with school-age children are reviewed. This chapter places emphasis on the historical context of the subject and on updating readers on the K-SADS-E. The diagnostic interviews currently available have several commonalities as well as significant differences. The selection process for a user should be based on how and why the evaluations are needed. When examining the commonalities, it should be noted that the interviews differ even on features that they share.
