Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of six control and safety systems supplied by large multinational companies. Each system will be studied with reference to the capabilities and features for internal communication, operator interface, control unit(s), host computer, application packages, and external interfaces. The ABB Master system communications comprise a set of database/links that are designed in compliance with ISO standards. Fisher x2 has developed a range of hardware/software packages to facilitate advanced control and to build a platform for the use of new techniques for better management of process plants. The PROVOX Communication facilities are designed to yield an open system architecture for easy integration into management systems. This chapter also discusses Honeywell TDC 3000, Siemens Simatic PCS7, Silvertech and Sentrol, and Simrad Aim. The critical aspects of a system that are considered for a particular project are system structure, compliance with relevant standards and codes of process, operator station and control unit, vendor experience, vendor size, vendor presence, and system costs.
