Abstract

In this chapter, we present the various short-circuit analysis techniques used in industry in the analysis of practical power systems. The application of Thévenin, Norton and superposition theorems in the simulation and analysis of short-circuit and open-circuit faults in networks with mixed voltage and current sources is presented. The fixed-impedance analysis technique is discussed, as well as the time variation of ac and dc short-circuit current components in networks of different topologies. A general analysis of large-scale power systems containing mixed rotating machines and inverters of balanced and unbalanced short-circuit faults and unbalanced open-circuit faults is presented. Fault analysis in the ryb phase frame of reference is briefly discussed.
