Abstract

Digital communication and data networking are the core requirements in providing the healthcare system with the necessary connectivity and services. In this chapter, techniques for source coding such as pulse code modulation, delta modulation, lossless data compression, and line coding and digital modulation techniques are covered. An overview of the telecommunication and wireless networks infrastructure are provided. To make the connected healthcare system truly meaningful and effective, other sources of health information systems such as EMR, electronic health record, PHR, and mHealth data should be incorporated. The aspects of interoperability, privacy, information security, human factors, and user experiences are key to the success of connected healthcare systems, and they should be integral part of the design process itself. Three real-world application scenarios are also described in this chapter.
