Abstract

This chapter discusses some of the basic operations of bit manipulation and character manipulation. It describes how these operations can be expressed in the Fortran language. The chapter also discusses how Fortran programs can be written for tasks, such as the input and output of alphanumeric data and the assembly of symbolic instructions into machine language. There are several ways of manipulating characters. One of these ways is to use the standard input routine to break a string of characters into a string of words containing one character each. This can be done by using the R1 format. The chapter illustrates this method by considering a character manipulation problem. The program would work in the Fortran 63 system.
