She specializes in language variation and change in American English, including ethnicity based and stylistic variation. She also conducts research, training, and case work in forensic linguistics. She is coauthor (with Walt Wolfram) of American English: Dialects and Variation (3rd ed., Blackwell, 2016); coeditor (with J. K. Chambers) of The Handbook of Language Variation and Change (2nd ed., Blackwell, 2013), and author of Sociolinguistic Fieldwork (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2013).
