Abstract
High-quality engine oils are essential in order to keep modern internal combustion engines operating efficiently and with low emissions over their full useful life. This chapter describes the role of engine oil and its composition. It then goes on to describe in detail the challenges faced and the way in which they are addressed. Future challenges from evolving fuel and material types are covered.
