Abstract

This article aims to examine the attempts to mediate the conflict and its implications that unfolded after the founding of the Tang dynasty. In particular, this article pays attention to Hoemaeng (會盟), which was tried in the form of “ritual”. Hoemaeng of 626 was attempted by Silla and Baekje under pressure of Goguryeo, by asking Tang dynasty for help. Although there was general consensus between the subjects of the conflict(Goguryeo, Silla) and the mediator(Tang dynasty), but Hoemaeng was eventually defeated due to the lack of active response from another subject, Baekje. It was also the result of Emperor Gaozu of Tang’s choice of being satisfied with the status quo instead of additional pressure when circumstances did not progress favorably, although he volunteered for mediator.<BR> After the Silla-Tang Allied Forces subdued the Baekje Revival Force, Hoemaeng between Silla and the Ungjin Commandery was held with the participation of imperial messenger, general Liu Renyuan(劉仁願) of Tang in 664 and 665. At that time, Hoemaeng was attempted in the name of reconciliation and mediation, but in fact it was the result of Tang’s intention to exercise direct authority over the Korean Peninsula beyond the position of mediator. In other words, the imposed peace from a big power worked more strongly than the mediation of the conflict, and ironically, this served as the main factor in the establishment of Hoemaeng .
