Abstract

This chapter discusses organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is known as the chemistry of carbon excluding the oxides, metallic carbonates, metallic hydrogen carbonates, and metallic carbonyls. Organic chemicals are classified by the content and arrangement of atoms within the molecules. Hydrocarbons are organic chemicals containing only carbon and hydrogen. A detailed study of these compounds provides a basis for a study of other organic chemicals containing atoms in addition to carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons are classified into four groups, namely, the alkanes, the alkenes, the alkynes, and the aromatic hydrocarbons.
