Abstract
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disease affecting up to 5% of all pregnancies worldwide associated with hypoxia as well as intrauterine growth restriction. It is a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Materno-fetal glucose transport is crucial for the fetal well-being since there is no de novo glucose synthesis in the fetus. We have shown that placental glucose transporter (GLUT) 1 is down-regulated in chronic hypoxia (at high altitude). Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate placental GLUT1 expression in preeclampsia.
