Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on two aspects of the recent development on linguistic theory and highlights their probable significance for certain issues arising in aphasiology. The chapter presents the theoretical model developed by Noam Chomsky and his school, which is referred to as the so-called Government-Binding Theory. An appropriate reference to the characteristics of this model can enhance the understanding of known material and guide research to discover new data and unlock new questions for the aphasiologist. The first approach toward this is the modular approach with the consequence that the theory sharpens and sometimes drastically reorganizes the pretheoretical classification of the relevant data; the second approach is based on configurational and nonconfigurational strategies.
