Abstract

Superabsorbent polymers are widely used in the production of medical textile products with high absorption capacities, such as baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, adult incontinence products, and many other applications. This chapter reviews the basic structures and properties of superabsorbent polymers and describes the manufacturing processses for these materials. Test methods for the evaluation of water absorption and retention are also described. In addition, the chapter offers an overview of the many applications of superabsorbent polymers in the medical and healthcare industry, such as functional wound dressings, drapes and cover cloths, drug administration, tissue engineering, etc.
