Abstract

The control of unpleasant odor is an important task for healthcare practitioners as well as textile engineers, and many techniques are available for odor control. This chapter reviews the complexity and diversity of odorants which can emanate from the human body and infected wounds and summarizes the odor-control methods, such as the use of antimicrobials to control infectious microbes and the absorption of odorants into the textile substrate. In particular, the use of activated carbon for odor control is analyzed. In addition, test methods are described for the subjective and objective assessment of the presence and concentration of odorants.
