Abstract

The title of this chapter is a reference to a book by T. Kuhn devoted to the structure of scientific revolutions. The chapter explains how Frey's idea, the publication of Serre's conjectures, the Mazur-Ribet theorem, and finally Wiles' exploits lifted the psychological barrier which had kept the elliptic approach to Fermat's last theorem in a state of hibernation for 15 years. As an effect of this liberation, there is an intense flow of new results and of open questions. It also suggests many publications regarding the same.
